Dear God,
This morning I read a troubling first-hand story written by Ann Voskamp, an author I read, who traveled to Iraq to listen to mothers tell tragic stories of what is happening to families terrorized by ISIS. Nine-year-old girls sold into slavery. Although I read the entire account, I could not get beyond these bold words. Nine-year-olds. I think of my granddaughters. My insides feel sick. I want to vomit, weep, and scream.
Have we lost our humanity? Is their any god who would sanction this behavior? How in the name of all that is sacred can we possibly dehumanize children?
I only serve you because I believe you are the god of love. If you were anything less, I would have to walk away. I believe you exist to love all children, no matter who and what we are and have become. I believe you teach love and compassion. A society and world built on love can make peace, provide hope, and care for one another. Anything less than love only destroys.
Cleanse us
from unrighteousness,
O God;
heal us
so we
may heal
one another.
Bless your babies;
keep them
from harm.
Show us
the way home.
Love always, Andrea
