Dear God,

Your world is a spectacular creation.  When we look to the night skies, sparkling stars twinkle quietly declaring, "Our God reigns."  As we stand at the ocean's edge, we witness your power and amazing beauty.  Even then, we can hear, "Be still and know that I am God."

When we open the whole of our being to you, we are enabled to see, hear, taste, touch and smell your divinity.  We can find peace in chaos, hope in despair and faith in fear.  No day need be wasted, we only need to be open to you.

Thank you
for the blessing
of faith.
Thank you
for peace.
Thank you
for hope
when we
are lost.

Love always, Andrea

Dearest God,

Who awakens us in the morning?  Who sings a song of welcome?  Who gently urges us to rise to a new day?  No one but you, Holy and Loving Father.

Oh the mere thought of your love for us, it sends me reeling.  Who could love us more?  Precious time in the early morning freshens our relationship with one another.  How sweet!  How beautiful!

Counting our daily blessings reminds us of the greatest relationship we have in this world.  Even when life is difficult, when hardships come, we still have your promises, your presence and your love.

Today I am especially grateful, Redeemer, Lover and Friend.

Thank you,
dearest God,
for your friendship.
Thank you
for your kindness.
Thank you
for your
early morning attention.

Love, Andrea

Dear God,

The land is holy ground.  More than a decade ago, you whispered to me, "There is the opening to the spiritual path."  As I gazed out over the gnarly, tangled, thorny woods, beset by so many invasive plants, vines and trees, I had no idea what you were talking about.  Yet, one day I picked up a shovel and began to dig.

I now realize I have simply been reclaiming what has always been yours.  Neglected, abused, really a horrible dumping ground for the broken, battered, lost, forgotten and ugly, it is now a living ground of beauty, hope and peace.  Your daily whisper heard not only by me but others as well continues to call us to work, clean, clear, plant and prune.  Thank you for the honor, Holy God.

Thank you
for the sound
of your voice,
for the work
of your hand
and for
the love
in your heart,
Majestic God.
I look out
into the woods
and all
I see
is you.
Praise to you.

Dear God,

We have been apart for nearly two years because of the pandemic.  But today my friend Ginny arrived to help work on the spiritual path.  Reunions bring sweet memories.

When we are separate from loved ones, our love for each other grows.  Do we long more for you when we are afar from you, O God?  Why is it we long for some and not for others?

It seems when we are in trouble and need help, we want to run to you, ask for help and wait for your assistance.  We know you are the answer to our dilemma.  Yet, in the intervening times we go on our merry way.  Why is that?

Search our hearts
and find
the truth
in us,
Living God.
We want you
more deeply
than we
want anyone,
yet we
do not
always operate
like those
who love you most.
Reshape us,
O God,
make us more
like you,
I pray.

Dear God,

Even your name can calm an anxious soul.  Like a mantra, the name Jesus can bring tranquility, peace and hope.

How many times has my own soul been troubled?  Whether about health, family relationships, the political well being of our nation, friends or economics, any of these can raise up fear, pain and anger.  And yet, when my soul is restless, your name can bring serenity like nothing else.  I have cried out your name over and over again in the middle of night when without knowing it, I fell into a deep sleep and slept like a baby.

Your name has quieting qualities like your love.

Thank you
for the gift
of your name,
O God.
Thank you
for caring
about us.
Thank you
for bringing us peace.

Dear God,

I found myself smiling all through worship this morning.  I couldn't help it; there was such a beautiful spirit in our little church.  Although there were less than 30 present, still the room was full of you.

As we lifted our joys and concerns for prayer, I felt a deep sense of love and compassion from the mostly elderly people.  We wanted to pray for the lonely people who still feel a sense of isolation and loneliness from the pandemic, those grieving from the condo collapse in Florida, family and friends with cancer and other debilitating diseases, a local, a young police officer's family who is grieving his death from a tragic blood clot that claimed his life after a simple surgery and so many others.  And so we prayed.

By the time the worship ended, I felt such joy and peace.  Who wouldn't smile?

Only you
are God,
Heavenly Father.
You fill us
with your peace.
Thank you
for worship
that gives us opportunity
to express
our gratitude
and thanksgiving.
You are blessed
and we
are blessed too.

Dear God,

What does it mean to really trust you?  I mean really trust?

How well I remember December 26, 1997!  In the very early morning hours just after celebrating the birth of Jesus the day before, I showered and made ready for a long day of surgery for breast cancer.  I stood in the hot shower and wept not because I was afraid (although I was) but because you were so very present to me.  I thanked the breast that would be removed in a few hours.  I thanked you for your love.  I thanked you for the water that spilled down my body for it felt like your wondrous glory anointing my whole body.  I knew that I knew that I knew I could trust you wholly and completely.

It is not easy to turn everything over to you.  Sometimes I fume or attempt to handle matters on my own.  I almost always fail.  But when I do trust, when I fall backward into your waiting arms, I feel such warmth and peace.  It nearly floods me like the shower on that cold December day.

Today as I ponder the word "trust" you are who and what and when and where that comes to mind.  Thank you.

Holy God,
mighty and full of compassion,
thank you
for all
the ways
you lead us
to trust you.
Thank you
for all
your gifts.
Thank you
for causing fear
to lead us
to you.
I am
so very grateful.

Dear God,

A miracle has been unfolding for 13 years.  A gnarly, tangled woods filled with numerous invasive species has given way to a beautiful hill, path and river.  Truly, it has revealed itself as a sacred garden, holy ground.

Who can do this kind of miracle work but you, O Lord?  Although I have joined your effort by digging in the dirt for all those years, I see the countless ways your spirit has been bringing healing to the land long neglected, filled with buckets of tossed debris, rusted toys, barbed wire and broken glass and let go to breed every unwanted weed, thorn and prickly bush.

It started all those years ago with one simple sentence:  "There is the opening to the spiritual path."  More and more every day I am seeing it, hearing your voice and dancing in my own spirit.  What can I say to you, Gracious and Loving God?

Holy are you,
God on High,
your spirit work
amazes, blesses
and inspires.
Thank you
for letting me
walk and work
beside you.
I am overcome
with joy.

Dear God,

You are the God of nature, the cosmos and all the people from all times and places.  You created all.  We owe your our allegiance, our loyalty and love.  Who else has invested more in us?

So often we allow others to determine our well being.  We look to them for value, relationship and meaning.  Yet, what can come from these moments of trust can lead us to a low place.  Our former president took one one group after another at home and abroad making statements about our lack of value.  Some groups he listed as living in "shitholes."  He tried to break people, to lower their status and value.  All this he did to uplift himself as greater than all.

Our God does not do this, not ever.  You uplift each and all.  You remind us even in our current state that we are the beloved of the Heavenly Father.  You are the first to greet us as we go astray always wooing us back home.  Your love is like no other.  If we listen to you, we can take heart of who we are, the child of God,

You are God,
our holy parent,
living presence
and blessed friend.
You give us value
because we
are your children,
first and foremost.
Thank you
for all
you provide.
We are blessed.
All praise
to you.

Dear God,

A walk around town can help grow our gratitude.  With no agenda except to walk, we can see and hear you more clearly in the smiles of other residents, the songs of the birds, the gobble of the wild turkeys, the babbling of babies, the greetings of other walkers, the gentle breezes, the water going over the dam and well, so many other ways.  Who can walk without looking up at a beautifully-painted sky and not know you are present from top to bottom, from side to side and from in and out?

This morning was just such a walk but then so was yesterday and the day before and the day before that.  The moment I step outside with a desire to walk, I know who is guiding me, filling me with joy and building strength in my body, mind and soul.

Thank you,
Amazing God,
for the gifts
you impart daily.
Thank you
for reminding us
whose we are
and all
you provide.
Thank you
for your kindness,
awesome majesty
and all
the life lessons
you teach us.
We are blessed.

Dear God,

How can we know you exist?  How can we be sure there is God?  How can we experience your living presence, not just stories we read about in the Bible?

I believe you reveal your presence every day.  As we become aware of the morning when we first open our eyes, our chest rises and falls with life-giving oxygen.  We recognize the fact that the darkness of night had turned to the light of day.  When we step out of bed and gaze upon pictures of loved ones on the dresser, we have to acknowledge love exists.  Each of these gives clues to the existence of a power greater than ourselves.

Early this morning as I walked downtown, my eyes fell on a saying etched into a brick near the Waterhouse. "There is always a way."  The quote stated.  When there are no visible ways, oftentimes faith  makes a way possible. Whoever paid for that brick thinks the impossible is possible and what makes something impossible into the possible is more than themselves.

I had no problem finding you today.

Loving God,
thank you
for signs
and wonders
all around us.
Thank you
for creation
and all
its marvel.
Thank you
for love
etched into
every stone.

Yours, Andrea

Dear God,

Why is it we can see trouble brewing in others but not in ourselves?  Why is it we cannot help transform someone who does not see the healing we see for them?  Why is it we have to stand back giving others the freedom to live their own lives even if we know their actions will take them down a dead end path?

O God, how much we want to rescue and save others from pain and sorrow.  We want to lift them up higher and higher so they can see beyond the mountain of trouble that lay ahead.  We want to save them from suffering that we know will come.  We hate seeing them hurting sidestepping healing and wholeness.  Yet, saving is your work and your work alone.  Yes, we must also work to save ourselves but our hand in yours will assure us of victory in some size or shape.  You have created us, O God.  You know better and more than we.  Help us to follow you and walk with others.

Blessed are you,
Almighty God.
Thank you
for the gift
of your spirit.
Thank you
for healing us,
for saving us
and teaching us.

Dear God,

Sometimes we pray for strangers we do not even know.  Someone asks us to pray and we do.  Without them even knowing it strangers become friends, loved ones during prayer.

Laurie, Brandon, Grant, Cedric, Tracey and Abby are all loved ones to me now.  I have prayed daily for Abby for years although I have never met her.  Laurie and Brandon appeared on a Facebook page a couple years ago.  As a new mother she is fighting cancer.  Grant spent years in prison for a murder he did not commit.  He was freed but cannot find work because no one wants to hire an ex-con.  Cedric and Tracy were a Christmas family my daughter and I took on.  The father nearly died with Covid.  I prayed then and just kept on praying.

I pray, Lord, because you brought each of these to me.  I am certainly no one special but I am honored you gave them to me in prayer.  As I pray I feel not only their presence but also yours.

I am grateful
for the gift
of love
through prayer.
Thank you
for connecting us together,
Gracious and Merciful God.
How blessed
we are
to be
your children,
all of us.

Dear God,

How many ways can we say thank you for all you do for us?  From the air we breathe to food on the table to medicine in the cabinet to clean water to drink to a warm home and comfy bed in which to sleep, how can we possibly adequately express our gratitude to you?  And yet, millions do not have these...millions.

How can we who have possibly live happy lives without caring for those whose lives consist of meager to no sustenance?  How can we live carefree lives with no participation in bettering the lives of those whose needs are many?  How can we eat knowing others have no food?

How?

Teach us
to see
what you see
and do
what you do
for others,
O God.
Show us
the way
to equal sharing.
Impassion us
with desire
to touch lives
in your name.

Dear God,

Today Lori received her new heart.  A 43-year-old man died.  At some point he signed a donor card.  It is possible to rejoice and weep at the same time.  We are doing both.

O God, in your creation you have put a loving spirit within each soul.  We can grow that spirit or not.  Some will help us grow our spirit; others will not.  But you, you make it possible.  Today this generous donor has grown his love to include my cousin.  We will never forget him.

Thank you
for this donor
whose name
we do
not know.
Thank you
for his generosity,
love and compassion.
Thank you

Dearest God,

You give us love for one another.  You make that love grow.  You give us a longing to share our lives in families and communities of friends.  You are the author and creator of love.  You first loved us so we could see how we could love one another.

I share that because my granddaughter flew to Maine to spend time with us.  She also brought her daughter, our great granddaughter as well.  The moment I lay eyes on them, I ran to Gabrielle, my grandchild and threw my arms around her.  "Gabrielle, Gabrielle, Gabrielle," I cried out.  Little Emmersyn was in her car seat and I went to her as well.

When Gabrielle's mother was in the hospital right after giving birth, she began to bleed out.  When the midwife worked to help my daughter, I sang to this new baby crying at the top of her lungs.  "I put my pinkie finger in her mouth to suck while I sang,
    "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine;
you make me happy when skies are gray.
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away."

My heart swelled greatly that day and every day since.  That kind of rich love only comes from you, Holy and Living God, only from you.

Blessed are you,
Great God of Love.
Creator of All That is God,
thank you
for the gift
of my granddaughter
and her daughter.
Thank you
for blessing us
with love
that not
only lasts
but keeps on giving.

Dear God,

When we move our attention from our own self to you, we shift our loyalty, love and hope.  At those sacred moments we are as united with you as we possibly can be.  Why don't we do it more often?

At any given hour we know you are the powerful source of all creation.  It is your air we breathe, your water we drink and your food we eat.  Without you there would be void.

Why do we let one hour, one minute go by without our attention on you in our relationships, work, service, love and purpose?  Without you, nothing is possible.  With you, all things are possible.

Teach us
your ways,
O God.
Turn our eyes
and ears
toward you.
Most of all
turn our hearts
to you.

Dear God,

Every day we search for truth.  Does it come from a politician's mouth, a priest or a next-door neighbor?  Is their truth reliable or do we search elsewhere?

For more than four years our nation has been on a search for the truth.  I am not sure even now if we know it, the full truth that is.  Yet, I am reminded of your words, "You will know the truth and the truth will set you free."

Perhaps we have to look deeper within ourselves.  Do we really want to know the truth, the whole truth?  Are we willing to be open to the truth revealed even if we do not want to accept it?  Sometimes a half truth will do it but really, is that all we want?  Or do we want more?

O God,
help us know
the truth,
the real truth
and nothing less
because only
this truth
will free us.
Guide us
through murky waters
to find
what only you
can reveal.
Please.

Dear God,

Truly you are the light of the world.  On any given day you bring light to your people.  Your light is not like the sunshine; it is brighter, more radiant.  Your light finds every crack of darkness.

How many times has your light shined on my darkness?  So many times.  Times when I was lost, afraid or perplexed, times when an insight came or a pearl of wisdom, times when forgiveness did not come easy, so many times when I needed an answer, guidance or help.  Each time I knew it was your light that made the difference.

Today I celebrate your light for in it I see you.

Guiding Light God,
thank you
for the warmth
of your love
that shines
in our lives.
Thank you
for revealing
the light
to us.
Thank you
for touching us,
inspiring us
and blessing us.

Dear God,

This morning as our organist softly played O God, Our Help in Ages Past, something shifted inside me.  I thought back to the pandemic, the economic downturn, the political chaos, the racial injustice and great division in our country and I realized this song I have heard and sung countless thousands of times in my life was personal today.  Warren was playing my song.  He was leading me to God who sustained me during the upheaval in our nation and world.  Tears filled my eyes as I quietly sang the lyrics,
"O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
a shelter in the stormy blast
                and our eternal home."

This great hymn written and published in 1719 had great power for me today but has also helped, guided, blessed, inspired and touched people for over 300 years.  How can that be?  It is because your spirit is packed into every portion of the song, the lyrics, melodies and harmonies, and everything that makes the song a great, wondrous and powerful hymn.

Thank you
for your
living spirit,
O God.
Thank you
for faith
that inspires
and lifts up.
Thank you
for making it personal
for me today.

Dear God,

The scriptures say, "You cannot say Lord, Lord, unless with the Holy Spirit."  Two small words, Lord, Lord, and yet, I acknowledge the truth of the statement.  In desperation when I have cried out for you, there was no hesitation, no holding back, I knew without a shadow of doubt you were Lord, Lord of the cosmos, of humanity, of all.  At other times when I have asked for something that would benefit me, I have not wholeheartedly trusted in you.  There is a difference, a dramatic difference.

I want to aspire to a full commitment to you, a wholehearted, authentic faith in you as Lord.  I want to live daily practicing that belief and confidence.  I also know I have to trust more, to live more faithfully and to release everything that holds me from this kind of love and commitment.  I realize by trusting more, you will more and more help me build a deeper, wider and higher faith.  I want that, dearest God; I want that.

Build my trust
in you,
Holy and Living God.
Show me
your way
to be courageous,
wise and knowing.
Help me surrender
all that
keeps me
from trusting more.
I pray this
in the
only name
that has
the power
to change me.

Dear God,

More bodies are being found in the condo collapse in Surfside, Florida.  First responders are still on the scene 24/7 helping to find family members from the rubble.  Although it is dangerous work, they are meticulously and carefully digging through the rubble for people who died.

These first responders are part of your precious family, O Lord.  They are risking their lives for others.  They are revealing what it means to be a human family caring for one another.  They are showing us a heavenly love.

O God, show us how to deeply love one another.  Teach us the way to love beyond political bias, color of skin, religious affiliation, gender and sexual identity, national origin and personal preference.  Cause us to love because all are human, all are yours, all are loved by you, all are precious and all are worthy of care.  Show us eternal love for one another.

You are God;
there is none
like you.
Help us
to be lovers
of humanity
like you,
Loving God.
We need
your lessons again.

Dear God,

Even before we rise in the morning, we need to reaffirm our whole trust in you.  We do not know what the day will bring.  We do not know whether we will fall victim to illness or disease, accident or trouble.  What we do know for certain is you are with us.

As we reaffirm our faith first thing in the morning, we reassure ourselves of your presence with us and our trust in you as we walk through the day together.  As we breathe out our trust in you, we strengthen ourselves with your power and strength.  And not only that we feel the sweetness of our relationship growing on so many levels.  We know love and feel it in our DNA.

Holy God,
lead us
in this
new day.
Teach us
to trust you
even before
we rise
from our bed.
Help us
turn our face
to you.

Dear God,

I simply sat on the ground and pulled weeds most of the day.  Doing work on the spiritual path keeps my own inner path clear of debris.  All I do there is for you.

I am awestruck by the unfolding beauty along the spiritual path in our woods especially as I continue to get close to the river shore.  By myself I would never have taken on this gargantuan task; yet, your gentle voice invited me in nearly 13 years ago.  I am still working in the soil of your holy land.

One of these days the path will be complete.  I wonder what that will mean for my own inner soul.

Holy God,
thank you
for the call
and the desire.
Thank you
for all
the guidance
you give.
The path
is yours,
The task
is mine.
How glorious
is the opportunity
to work together.

Dear God,

In the quietness of this moment, I realize right now there is no one but you and me.  In this holy moment I am grateful to be your child.  Gratitude wells up deep within me and I know that I know that I know you love me more than all the rest of my loved ones love me.  But then you love each of them the same way.  Each of us is your beloved, loved more than all the rest.

How can your love stretch so far?

Thank you
for this
amazing truth,
Gracious, Giving God.
Thank you
for love
that encircles us.
Thank you
for loving me
but also
for loving all.

Dear God,

Anything good I do is because of you, Living God.  When I do not want to do something and I finally do it, it is because you nudged me and gave me determination and courage.  Suddenly, I become aware of your power and love to change us tiny bits at a time.

I have a cranky neighbor.  I have helped her with her gardens, fence row and the wedding for her daughter.  She almost never thanks me or acknowledges my presence.  I really don't like her very much; yet, when the moment arises, the moment of your nudge, I say something kindly to her.  I am not saying this to get credit or boost my own value, not at all.  I am simply paying tribute to you, Loving God, for the nudge, the love and the compassion you show to both of us, my neighbor and me.

Although I know your power upfront, still I will take matters in my own hands and fail to achieve what I can with your help and kindness.  I am sorry.  Thank you for reminding me you are always with me to nudge, cajole, help, guide and hold me.

You are God;
there is none
like you.
You are
always blessing us.
All we
need do
is follow
your lead.
Thank you,
Wondrous God.

Dear God,

Some days there is not much to say but thank you.  When life is steady and easy going, no dilemmas, no drama, just solid good, it is a perfect time to express gratitude.  Today is such a day.

Few days slip by without me giving you thanks.  I know who is the source of all my good.  I am convinced all good things come from you.  When I look at the love I receive, the gifts of your spirit that are made manifest and the comforts I enjoy, I know you have provided them.  I cannot imagine any other thought.

I decided a long time ago that I wanted to die with gratitude on my lips.  I want to be saying thank you over and over again.  I want to express my thanksgiving to you and others.  I want to leave this world some day giving praise and thanks.

Holy and Living God,
thank you
for every gift.
Thank you
for making me aware
of your
generous spirit.
Thank you
for showing me
the way
to gratitude.

Dear God,

Today I was reminded again how important it is to grow faith and trust in you.  As I faced my fear of flying once again, I realized how critical it is to face our fears with faith.  With storms erupting from unusably high temperatures across the country and a hurricane forming in the Atlantic, I knew it was going to be a bumpy ride from Orlando, Florida to Boston, Massachusetts.  I got on the plane praying.

As we hit the first of many bumps, I affirmed my faith in you, Almighty God.  "The Lord is my shepherd."  I quietly proclaimed.  "I am your little lamb, Loving God; you are my shepherd."  For two and a half hours, I repeated these words and when I was not whispering these, I spoke, "Thank you, Lord; thank you, thank you, thank you."

For me turning to you when I am afraid, anxious or troubled brings solace and comfort.  It does not cure me, rather it keeps me at your feet sharing my pleas and praise.  For that I am exceedingly grateful.

Holy and Living God,
thank you
for being
my hope.
Thank you
for your generosity.
Thank you
for holding me
while I grew
in faith.

Dear God,

As I write, I look to my left seeing my cousin's husband Steve, a rare kind of guy.  A former fire chief for many years, his new, full-time job is taking care of his wife until she receives a new heart.  His constant, loving care keeps this household from falling apart with worry, anxiety and fear.

During my daughter's and my brief stay, we have talked about things that matter, really matter.  We have expressed love and devotion to one another.  We have discussed the what-ifs but have not stumbled into despair rather we have buoyed up one another.  I would like to think that faith has been woven into every conversation.

There are so many things in life where we have little to no control.  Without a heart Lori will die in the next few months.  With a new heart, she could have many years.  The only one who knows Lori's future is you, O God.  How do we pray for a new heart for my beloved cousin when we know someone else will face a fatal blow?

Gracious and Merciful God,
you hold us all
in your hands.
We are blessed
by you.
Our hope
and everything else
is in you.
Thank you.

I saw her standing there weeping and hugging my daughter.  Best friends 1200 miles apart, this was a much anticipated moment.  I too got my chance and was swept up with emotion.  My cousin Lori, isolated for so many reasons, is waiting for a new heart.

Reunions are sweet when loved ones come together.  My daughter, cousin and I are enjoying this precious time together.  But there is no sweeter reunion than a coming together with you.  When we have been far off and decide to come back home, you are always waiting.  In fact you start to run even before we do lessening the gap between us.  When we finally touch, agape love bursts forth and we are engulfed by all that is good and wonderful.

Thank you,
Living God,
for reunions
that draw us together.
Thank you
for the joy
they give.
Thank you
for blessed homecomings.

Love, Andrea

Dear God,

We gathered to share our truths, our confessions and our hopes.  In your presence on retreat we found you living and breathing within us.  We found open doors, comfort and guidance.  We drank in the joy that unfolded.  We celebrated with you and one another.

As we concluded with a living supper of joy, we offered up praise and thanksgiving for finally reuniting with one another after the long, agonizing months of the pandemic.  Covid had kept us away but now we were together again.

Holy and Living God,
thank you
for the gifts
of your
holy spirit.
Thank you
for your presence,
speaking, cajoling,
inspiring, helping
and holding.
We have
been restored,
renewed and revitalized.

Love, Andrea
