Dearest God,
Four little girls aged 8, 7, 4 and 3 spent the day with me. We started at the movies, then went to the grocery store for goodies. We came home and I started a fire in the fireplace and then put a white plastic tablecloth on the floor for our winter picnic. I took hot dogs and marshmallows and made us a dinner in the fireplace. With raw fruits and vegetables to make a fun dinner we sat by the fire and the lighted Christmas tree eating and talking. The room lighted by candles, tree lights, and the fire we each grabbed a Frosty and we danced to Christmas music. We rounded out the night with The Polar Express. They're still sleeping.
In the quietness of this hour I pause to give thanks. These granddaughters bring me such joy and blessing. Their laughter and spontaneous hugs help me realize the gifts that come from your hand. As I rocked back and forth with my Frosty, I watched them rock too. I saw the smiles on their faces and listened as they sang the songs.
I started the new year with grandchildren. I wanted the first day of the new year to be one of joy and happiness for these little ones who are growing up before my eyes. I wanted to hug each one, tell them I love them. I wanted to give them the certainty of a grandma who loved them very much. I wanted to give them a dose of fun and joy that will give memories to reflect upon in sad and difficult times.
When I told the two older girls that my book had finally be published, they were so excited. When I handed them a copy to read, they could hardly wait for us to sit down by the tree to hear a story. They chose Pick and A Christmas Train.
The relationships you have given me are so wonderful. The fact that each one has faith in their own way is a delight. We had to sing our prayer learned at preschool. I can speak of you who they know as Friend.
As I tucked each one into their sleeping bags, having carried two who had fallen fast asleep during the movie, I looked into their tiny faces and then gave them a kiss on the cheek. Blessed, I tell you, I am blessed.
God Who Creates Relationships,
I marvel
and give thanks
for my blessings.
My grandchildren
bring solace
to my soul
when I am sad.
They bring delight
when I am down.
And joy,
well that's
the one prevalent emotion
always present
when we are together.
I want
to thank you
on this
second day
of the new year.
I count
my relationship
with my grandchildren
as one
of my greatest blessings.
Thank you,
dearest God,
thank you.
Love, Andrea
