Dear God,
I had arrived early at the monastery chapel so I sat quietly, gazed upon the cross, and watched as the sisters entered the holy space. Each one came down an aisle, paused, bowed to the altar, and then found themselves a seat. Minutes later we stood, the organ played, one sister sang, "O Lord, open my mouth," and we responded, "And my mouth shall declare your praise."
As we moved through the liturgy, I thought of how we should begin every day with a bow to you. If we could begin with an acknowledgement of you as God and we as children, our perspective could change as our day unfolded. We would be more conscious of your presence and the likelihood of a revelation of your spirit. If conflict were to arise, we would anticipate your love to be present in the room. We would think of your mercy and function as merciful, caring individuals. If fear snared us, we would reach out to the one whose love overcomes fear. If we were surprised with a kindness, we would give thanks. If we were harboring resentment or worry, we would know we were not alone and ask for help.
Thank you,
Wondrous God,
for daily reminders
of your
living spirit.
As we open
our eyes,
we are enabled
to see you
in our midst.
We are empowered
to hear
your footsteps.
Teach us,
dear God,
to attend
to your spirit
every day.
Love, Andrea
