Dearest God,

At my writing desk, I can look out my bay window to watch chipmunks popping out of a hole in our front yard. No bigger than a silver dollar at the opening, the mother sits with her baby beside her. Like most babies, this one climbs up the side of its mother, scratches its nose and plays while the mother watches, protecting her young.

I think that's the way you are with us humans. I believe you live with us in our self-made small places. I believe you sit with us close and snuggly especially when we feel squeezed by life circumstances. Watching out for enemies, you whisper intimate words of affection like a parent does to her young. I must admit that there is great comfort knowing you remain with us during troubled times. When I watch mother and baby chipmunk interact, I smile remembering times when you and I have done the same.

Thank you,
Gracious God,
for pastoral scenes
that bring
a kind
of peace
and serenity.
The whole
of creation
seems to want
to share
your story.

Love, Andrea
