Dear God,

What news will we hear today? What sorrow, grief and despair will appear on the television? What tragedy will strike? The latest in a string of events is renewed oil in the gulf. What is happening to the earth?

The news is unsettling for many and devastating for so many more. What are we to do to change the course of events? Is the planet itself heaving, convulsing with evil due to humankind's mistreatment of humankind?

Have we caused our own demise?

Help us,
O Lord,
to wake up
to our need
to honor
and care
for one another.
Teach us
the way
of compassion,
understanding, and acceptance.
Remind us
that we
are brother
and sister
to all,
I pray.
