Dearest God,

What makes the soul dark?  What corrupts the human spirit?  How does evil take hold of goodness and destroy it?

My heart is sad for families in India whose children died of pesticide poisoning, for victims of human trafficking, and for every kind of injustice in every country.  Why do we want to harm one another? Why do we seek to steal the innocence of children?  Why do we rob the weak?  Why do we not care for every human on the planet?

As I listen to the news I am outraged by evil that does harm to so many regardless of where and to whom.  But then you whisper to me.  You ask me to look inside myself.  When I am honest with me I realize I too am flawed.  Sometimes I harm by my words, deeds, and actions.  I fail to be loving and giving.  I want my own way.  I forget you.

Merciful God,
rid us
of evil
within us.
Let your
light shine.
Remove our darkness.
Make the
way clear
for your mercy.
Forgive us
when we
fail you,
when we
forget you,
when we turn
from you.
Cleanse us,
I pray.
Remake us
for you
and our neighbor.
