Dear God,
Delight fills my soul the moment I lay eyes upon my grandchildren. They're took big to take a flying run and jump effortlessly into my arms anymore but they surround me if there are three. If two I grab hold of each one and squeeze them giving them a dozen quick kisses on the forehead. I am full to overflowing when I am with them.
I believe you have made relationships to be like that. I believe you want the thread that binds us to be long and strong. I believe you want joy to erupt inside us when we see one another, particularly if it has been a while. I believe you want our time together to feed our souls, to fill us with beauty, goodness, and thanksgiving.
I recognize we are flawed. Sometimes we hurt one another. We are insensitive, selfish, and busy. We don't attend to each other's needs as we should. We forget; we take for granted. We fail to be family, to love and care in the midst of life's craziness.
How is it with you? Do you ever want to step away from us when we neglect you, when we assume you will take care of all our needs without our gratitude? Do you ever want to surrender us to our own will and way?
And what about our homecoming? Do we run to you? Do we feel ecstatic to be with the One who loves us most? Do we surround you with love? Are we filled with gratitude?
Daily remind us
of our relationship
to you,
I pray.
Cause us
to remember
the eternal cord
that connects us
to you.
Recall to
our minds
the one relationship
that means
the most,
the one
with you.
Teach us
to cultivate
a rich
and loving relationship
with you.
Forgive us
when we fail.
Receive us
when we return,
I pray.
Teach us
to be grateful.
Love, Andrea
