My dearest God,
One of my favorite songs is Lead Me, Guide Me, an African American Spiritual. I love it because it is my heart prayer, a desire to give myself to you so that you will lead and guide me.
I need your guidance every day, not because I am not capable of making decisions but rather because I want what you want for my life. I want to be flexible, able to bend with the spirit, to follow you rather than lead.
On Saturday I stood on the veranda of a retreat center. The Blossoming Pear tree (I think that's what it is called) was blowing in the breeze. The small blossoms were releasing themselves from the branch and blowing in the wind. As they hit the sidewalk, they fell to their side. But when the wind picked up, so did the blossoms, dancing along the concrete. Hundreds of dancing petals.
I watched the petals and thought about how I want to be like them, to lie still until the spirit wind blows. And then, of course, I want to dance. I want to dance and twirl, stand on end and roll and then dance some more. I too want to be lead by your spirit wind.
Make me light
as a feather,
Creator God,
so I
can easily
pick up
and dance,
twirl
to your
spirit breath.
Make me
a delight
to you
as I bend
to your will.
Love, Andrea
