Dear God,

Yesterday they finally came tumbling down out of the sky, those amazing fluffy white snowflakes.  Since the last snowfall last winter I have looked forward to their return.  I moved to the window and looked out, my nose practically smashed against the window pane.

Something happens when it snows.  I feel a sense of wonder.  My whole being warms up.  But it's more than all that.  I am drawn closer to you.  For I realize each snowflake is unique.  No two are the same, each one intricately designed by the creator of the universe.  When they join together and blanket the landscape, I realize your love, your beauty, and your awesome power.

The season of winter reveals the wonder of you, Beloved God.  In winter the greatest growth takes place as roots and bulbs take in nourishment from the ground.  All may look barren but underneath there is life and activity that won't be revealed until spring and summer.

Winter is vitally important not only for plants and trees but for human souls as well.  Winter calls us to dig deeper too.  It calls us to reflect, to ponder, and to pause for praise and thanksgiving.  It invites us to eat and drink from your table.  It teaches us to be silent and to listen for your voice.

Holy God,
thank you
for the gift
of winter.
Thank you
for snowflakes.
Thank you
for all
the seasons,
even the season
of faith.

Love, Andrea
