Dear God,
Death is always before us. Nature reveals to us death as summer gives way to falling leaves in Autumn. People we love grow old and die. Their passing causes us to reflect upon our own mortality.
But death is part of life. "Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and die, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces much grain." The writer of the book of John reminds us of this death process. Death is not the end of things.
Death can bring with it celebration. As we awaken to each new day, we have opportunity to celebrate the day and all its possibilities because when the day is over, it is gone forever. That day is dead, in the past. We can take with us all that is good from the day but we have to let go of today in order for tomorrow to come.
So we do not need to be afraid of death but welcome it as part of this glorious human experience. In dying we have the rare moment to say thank you for all that has been for all that is yet to come.
Help us
let go,
dear God.
Help us celebrate
all that
has been
to make way
for all
that is
to come.
Thank you
for life lessons
that teach us.
Yours, Andrea
