Dearest God,

You invite us to take the straight path to you, the straight path to faith, and the straight path to love, mercy and grace.  Why is it we most often take the path that is anything but straight?

Recently I have been engrossed in reading the works of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and St. John of the Cross.  They get to the heart of the matter quickly.  We can walk the journey to faith slowly or swiftly.  Our beliefs, practices and obedience or lack of it can render us slow or fast.

Life experiences from the first day to today give us cause to celebrate or to turn or to change or to receive or to give.  Over a lifetime they bless us immeasurably.  However, the gifts of your spirit do not even begin to compare with a lifetime of earthly blessings.  They so far surpass anything the earth can give.  So when the straight path is offered, why do we grab for something less?

Teach us
to trust,
to rise up,
and to
take hold,
O God.
Teach us
the way
to the
straight path.
May we learn
all you have
to teach us.
Thank you
for mercy
that gives us
second, third,
fourth and more chances
to find
our way.

Love, Andrea
