My dearest God,

There is a sweetness in your mercy.  When we lean on you for comfort and direction, you infuse us with hope, grace, and compassion.  Who could reach out to love more?

I watched as the doctor and anesthesiologist spoke their surgery words with tenderness.  I listened as the chaplain offered prayer for my husband attended by four of our children.  In a circle holding hands I was quietly praying for reconciliation.  At that moment I believe you penetrated every heart challenging us to love one another.  That love was the impetus for compassion and civility.

But it was when the surgeon returned with great news earlier than expected that I sensed an underlying layer of mercy.  I saw you in his face and in his smile.  Although the best news was that my husband came through surgery with four bypasses, the even greater news was the reminder of the constancy of your love.  Sweet mercy.

Dear God,
Hope of Heaven,
thank you
for the gifts
of healing,
hope, and health.
Thank you
for your
generous spirit,
your many gifts,
and your
tender kindness.
Thank you
for your mercy,
the greatest gift
on earth.

Love, Andrea
