Dear God,
What shall we talk about, you and I? Shall we write about creation and the wondrous seasons you designed and orchestrated? Shall we write about the sorry state of our nation and world and the hope you offer? Or shall we write about silence, not the absence of sound, but rather the world of silence, that vast world of your spirit where thoughts, contemplation and love become visible and real?
I used to be terrified of silence because I always imagined evil and darkness existed there. I don't know where those thoughts came from; they just did. So, I filled the silence with sound, the television, radio and CD player. And yet, what I found was just more noise, no peace, joy or you.
I was nearly 50 years old when the Carmelite sisters taught me about silence, the doorway to the divine. Worshipping with them on Wednesday mornings, retreating with them for a week while I finished a family book and observing them when they were invaded by an intruder who beat two sisters taught me so much about a world I did not know existed. Once they opened the door for me, I never let go.
You and I live together in this mysterious space where we sit in the quiet and contemplate anything and everything. We can do this while I work on the spiritual path, do dishes or wash clothes. Our richest times are when we are still, our focus completely on faith and ideas, thoughts, insight, wisdom and joy arise to uplift, challenge and restore. It is the most cherished part of my life.
Holy, holy, holy
are you,
God Most High.
How I love
our days togethers.
Thank you
for these
holy moments
where I
am still
and you speak.
Thank you
for our
shared joy
and peace.
Love, Andrea
