Dear God,

We sat together in the spiritual direction room while he poured out his heart.  Things looked pretty bleak.  Not much hope until I asked the question, "Is that all your story?"  He looked a little perplexed, then nodded.

During our hour together we heard your whispers.  Our whole story can be what is troubling us or more than that.  The one issue can take up the entire space of the story or we can write something more, something better, something more purposeful.  We can write anything.

As my friend rose to leave, he had more color, more enthusiasm and more hope.  He decided there was more to his story and he determined to go home and start writing and more living.

Holy God,

wherever we are

in life, 

you teach us

more about ourselves

and about you.

When our 

stories become

small and threatening,

you invite us

to include you

in our story.

Immediately to

our surprise,

our stories

open up

to more.

Hope can have

a chance

once again.
